Why do we ... ?

Why do we clap our hands?

"Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy." (Psalm 47:1)

Why do we lift up our hands?

"Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord." (Psalm 134:2)

Why do we praise out loud unto God?

"I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you." (Psalm 22:22)

Why are people so excited and spontaneous in worship?

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the spirit and in truth." (John 4: 23-24)

Why do we sing choruses as well as hymns?

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord." (Ephesians 5: 18-19)

Why do we pray or sing in strange tongues and in English?

"For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind." (Corinthians 14: 14-15)

Why do we have "speaking with tongues" and "interpretation of those tongues"?

"Therefore my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues."

(1 Corinthians 14:39)

"Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people..." (1 Corinthians 14:21)

"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good...to another speaking of different tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues."

(1 Corinthians 12: 7 & 10)

Why do we anoint with oil and pray for the sick?

"Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven." (James 5: 14-15)

Why does the whole church pray at once for specific needs?

"So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord, and said, 'Lord, Your are God, who made heaven and earth'..." (Acts 4: 24)
